International Year of light (IYL) 2015
On 20 December 2013, the UN General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). Light plays a vital role in our daily lives and is an imperative cross-cutting discipline of science in the 21st century. It has revolutionized medicine, opened up international communication via the Internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society. Noting that 2015 coincides with the anniversaries of a series of important milestones in the history of the science of light, including the works on optics ‘kitabul manazir ‘ the book of optics by Ibn Al-Haytham in 1015.
Ibnul hythem
Ibn al-Haytham , known in the West as Alhazen, was born in the year 965 in Basra, and died in about 1040 in Cairo. He was one of the earliest Arab Muslim scientists and philosopher who is widely considered as one of the most influential scientists of all time. Referred to as the father of experimental physics and modern optics and scientific methodology, he made significant contributions to the principles of optics, astronomy, mathematics, meteorology, visual perception and the scientific method. He is regarded to be the first theoretical physicist and he has been the earliest to discover that a hypothesis has the necessity to be experimented through confirmable procedures or mathematical evidence, hence developing the scientific method 200 years before it was approved by Renaissance scientists. In medieval Europe, he was honoured as “Ptolemy the Second” or simply called “The Physicist”. Out of the 96 books he is recorded to have written; only 55 are known to have survived.
Kithabul manazir – the book of optics
The Book of Optics is a seven-volume treatise on optics composed by the medieval Arab scholar Ibn al-Haytham in 1015. The Book of Optics presented experimentally founded arguments against the widely held extramission theory of vision and in favor of intromission theory, as supported by thinkers such as Aristotle, the now accepted model that vision takes place by light entering the eye. Ibnul haytham’s work extensively affected the development of optics in Europe between 1260 and 1650. Kitab al-Manazir, is commonly translated into English as Book of Optics but more properly has the broader meaning Book of Vision.
